ISLAMABAD: A seven-member Iranian delegation headed by Attorney General of Iran Seyyed Muhammad Jafar Montazeri on Tuesday called on Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali here at the Supreme Court.
The chief justice welcomed the delegation and discussed issues of mutual interest. He told the delegation that there were similarities between the two countries, as they had similar culture and social values. Both the countries could take advantage by sharing the experiences and knowledge in different fields, he said.
He also said that it would enhance the cooperation between the judiciaries of the two countries as well as other fields of mutual interests. The chief justice informed the delegates that the judicial academies were established at Islamabad and at all provincial headquarters in Pakistan to impart judicial education to judges, lawyers, prosecutors and court staff.
The judicial officers of Iran could also take advantage of these judicial academies, which would help enhance cooperation between the two countries, he said. The Iranian attorney general informed the chief justice about different agreements between the two countries on issues of exchanging prisoners and emphasised the need to implement them for benefit of the people.
He requested the CJP to take steps for release of Iranian people from Pakistani jails in different cases. Chief Justice Jamali assured them to consider if it was taken up through official channels. The visiting delegation offered condolences on the tragic incident of attack on the Police Training Centre in Quetta. They also conveyed good wishes of head of Iranian judiciary to the chief justice and extended a request to visit Iran.
The delegation presented the Holy Quran with Persian translation and souvenir to the chief justice, as token of respect and goodwill gesture. The CJP also reciprocated the gesture by presenting a memento on the occasion.
Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan Mehdi Honardoost, Deputy Attorney General for Narcotics Affairs Mohammad Ali Cheragheyan, Head of Attorney General’s office Ali Akbar Bkhtiari, Siymak Saeedi Favaedi and Foreign Ministry Director Javad Kazemi were also present in the meeting.
