LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday dismissed appellate tribunal’s verdict to disqualify former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for life.
During the hearing, LHC cleared Abbasi to contest polls from his home constituency NA-57 Murree on July 25, dismissing election commission’s appellate tribunal’s verdict.
LHC also granted permission to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry to contest polls from NA-67 Jhelum constituency. Earlier the appellate tribunal had barred Chaudhry from contesting polls.
Earlier today, LHC had summoned NA-57 Murree constituency returning officer (RO) over Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s petition against appellate tribunal’s disqualification verdict.
Election Commission’s appellate tribunal had previously found the former premier guilty of concealing facts and tampering in his nomination papers. The appellate tribunal disqualified Abbasi to contest elections from Murree constituency.
However, the LHC later overruled the disqualification verdict, giving a green signal to the former premier to contest polls on July 25 on an interim basis.
Earlier during Wednesday’s hearing, High court Judge had questioned and warned Abbasi of passing anti-judiciary remarks that are harming and destroying the system.
